On the shores of Lough Derg, in County Clare, Ireland, lies the beautiful village of Mountshannon.
It’s an award-winning village, having earned Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town title multiple times, and it’s not difficult to see why.
This serene destination delivers a distinctive allure of Irish charisma – a place where history, nature, and tranquillity converge.
While the village can be quiet in the winter months, in the summer it comes alive. Mountshannon community market is held every on Saturday once per month, its held between 11 and 2pm in the main street of the village. It has a large range of local artisan foods and crafts to explore. There are a few cafes and pubs where you can find a nice meal or grab a pint.
Mountshannon Harbour & Lough Derg
One of the main attractions that call for your attention in Mountshannon is the harbour and marina. An array of boats are moored here and its the perfect place to take in the beautiful Lough Derg.
There are picnic tables all around for you to sit and relax, and right beside the harbour is a lovely swimming area that has a lifeguard on duty during the summer and is popular with locals.
Holy Island
A trip to the historic Inis Cealtra, also known as Holy Island, is highly recommended. Located in Lough Derg, a short boat ride from Mountshannon pier, This island is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland, with remnants of several churches, a round tower, a holy well, and a remarkable graveyard.
From Mountshannon Pier, a resident guide provides daily boat excursions and guided tours to Holy Island. These tours, contingent on favourable weather conditions, operate from April through the end of September.
Lough Derg White-Tailed Eagles
The resurgence of the majestic sea eagles in Lough Derg represents a captivating spectacle that nature enthusiasts shouldn’t miss when in Mountshannon. Reintroduced to Ireland in 2007, these magnificent birds have chosen the islands within the lake as their home, making it one of the few places in Ireland where they can be observed.
From vantage points around Mountshannon, you can often spot these impressive raptors soaring above the water, hunting for fish, or resting in their colossal nests. Binoculars or a good camera lens can enhance the experience, allowing you to admire the sea eagles’ size and grace in detail.
Aistear Park
Mountshannon’s Aistear Park, a multi-award-winning location, is located in the centre of the village with access from the main road at the top and from the harbour.
This tranquil park is best known for its intricate labyrinth, made of local stone, symbolizing life’s journey. Established in 2001, Aistear Park is a reflection of the area’s rich heritage, providing a glimpse into the ancient traditions and history of Mountshannon.
WoodPark Forest Park
Located on the edge of Mountshannon, Wood Park is a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. This public park is more than just a green space, it’s a community hub where locals and visitors alike can enjoy leisurely walks, picnics, and outdoor activities.
A walk through the park reveals an impressive variety of trees and plants, creating a lush canopy and providing a home for local wildlife. The park also has several benches perfectly positioned for quiet reflection or simply to soak in the surrounding beauty.
Getting There
Mountshannon, located in Co.Clare is a 40-minute drive from Ennis and about an hour from Limerick. The closest international airport is Shannon Airport, approximately 58 km away. Public transport is not great in this part of Ireland, a car is definitely recommended when exploring.
