An Overview of Galtymore

Standing at an impressive 919 meters (3,011 feet), Galtymore is the highest peak in the Galtee Mountains and one of Ireland’s most iconic summits.

The mountain range spans across County Tipperary and County Limerick, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

The Galtee Mountains boast a rich variety of flora and fauna. As you explore, be on the lookout for indigenous wildlife, such as red deer, foxes, and an array of bird species.

Galtymore’s slopes nurture a diverse collection of plant life, including heather, bilberries, and distinct mosses.

Route Options for Galtymore Climb

There are several routes to choose from when climbing Galtymore. Three popular options include:

Kings Yard Route

This is the route I took when I came here and recorded the video that you can watch above. It starts in a private farm car park where you need to pay a few euros to park. It’s just under 11km and can take 4-6 hours.

The Black Road Route

Starting from the Black Road car park, this route takes you through the open countryside and along the well-defined path leading to Galtymore’s summit. The climb takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete.

Galtee Horseshoe Route

The Galtee Horseshoe route, also referred to as the Circuit of Glencushnabinnia, presents another option from the north. This challenging 13 km trek encompasses the summits of Cush, Galtybeg, Galtymore, and Slievecushnabinnia.

Allocate roughly 6 hours to complete this picturesque loop. Park at “Car Park Galtymore North” if you want to take this route.
