Mens Beach & Ladies Beach
Ballybunion Beach was once divided into the Men’s Beach and the Ladies’ Beach, a reflection of the social norms of the time. In the early 20th century, it was common for beaches to be segregated by gender, with different areas allocated for men and women to swim and sunbathe.
The Men’s Beach at Ballybunion was located to the north of the castle ruins, while the Ladies’ Beach was situated to the south. The two sections were separated by a wall, which ensured that men and women could enjoy the beach without interacting with each other.
Today, this practice of segregating beaches by gender is no longer common, and both men and women are free to enjoy the entire length of Ballybunion Beach. However, the ruins of the wall that once separated the Men’s Beach and the Ladies’ Beach are still visible and offer a glimpse into the history of the area.
Getting there:
Ballybunion Beach is located just off the N69 road, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Tralee. There is ample parking available near the beach, making it easy to access by car. Alternatively, there are regular bus services from Tralee to Ballybunion town.
